Maria “Lou” Calanche’s commitment to public service was forged in her Boyle Heights community after witnessing systemic inequities. At 19, she reclaimed a local park by starting a girls’ softball team, later founding the nationally recognized nonprofit Legacy LA to support youth. Now, as Executive Director of ExpandLA, she continues her lifelong work empowering families, drawing on extensive experience as a political science professor and city commissioner to build stronger communities.
